About Me
Hello, my name is Shixiang Fan. Welcome to my seal carving site.
When I was a little kid, I dreamed to have a Chinese chess set so that I could play it with my friends.
My family was poor, and we could not afford it. There was a Majhong factory by the way to my home
from school. They dumped those Majhong trash materials every day. I carved a Chinese chess pieces myself
using their trash. Since then, seal carving has been my favoriate hobby for more than 25 years...
In elementry school, grade 5, I was late because of seal carving at home. My teacher searched my pocket
and found the half-done seals, he threw them out of the windows. After many times, he called my dad. My dad
did not stop me even though he promised my teacher.
In high school, I met this great friend, Wei He, who also had been doing seal carving for many years. We studied seal
designs, techniques together. At that time, I systematically read many seal carving books. And it was during that time
that I learned how to do seal carving in a professional way.
In college, my friend, Shaoxing Li, loves Chinese calligraphy a lot. From him, I learned a lot about the beauty
of Chinese calligraphy. In seal carving, it is not easy to use a knife like a brush. After so many years practices,
My friends and I saw the Calligraphy spirit in my seals.
When I worked for CERIS, Beijing, China, during 1991-1995, I met this person working at Beijing Capital Museum, she was working
in the seals section. She taught me many things about seal carving. And I was brought to a much higher level in
seal designing.
Then I came to USA, I brought my tools, stones, books, dictionaries... I study it myself. I have my happy hours with my seals.
